Mögliche Anwendungsbereiche sind AMI-Bescheinigungen, intelligente Zählerablesung, Teillastreduzierung, Energieanalyse und Lastprofile als Ersatz für Lastabwurf. Experten für das Internet der Dinge (IoT) haben Interesse an Smart-City-Initiativen gezeigt, die das Smart Grid und AMI nutzen. Eine der wichtigsten Komponenten der AMI für den Informationsaustausch sind drahtlose Kommunikationsnetze. Die Tatsache, dass cyber-physische Systeme wie AMI privat, sicher und leicht zugänglich sind, ist eine ihrer wichtigsten Eigenschaften. Die Forscher haben ein drahtloses Kommunikationsprotokoll entwickelt, das eine zuverlässige und sichere Datenübertragung bei geringem Stromverbrauch und geringem Overhead ermöglicht, um den Anforderungen von cyber-physischen Systemen gerecht zu werden: ein neues Protokoll namens Secure and Reliable AMI (SRAMI), das ein drahtloses Sensornetzwerk (WSN) und einen vertrauensbasierten Zuverlässigkeitsmechanismus für AMI verwendet, um AMI sicherer und zuverlässiger zu machen.
