En Doce años de esclavitud (1853) Solomon Northup cuenta cómo le engañaron para ir a Washington, donde fue secuestrado y vendido como esclavo en el sur profundo de Estados Unidos, una peripecia de la que además detalla los extensos mercados de este tipo de comercio en la capital y Nueva Orleans, el cultivo de algodón y azúcar y el tratamiento al que eran sometidos en las principales plantaciones de Louisiana. El autor estuvo en cautiverio durante doce años, hasta que pudo comunicarse secretamente con sus amigos y familiares de Nueva York, quienes, junto con el estado, le ayudaron en su liberación. La novela se publicó ocho años antes de la Guerra de Secesión y vendió 30.000 copias, convirtiéndose en un éxito de ventas. Las memorias se han adaptado en dos versiones cinematográficas, una en 1984 como película para televisión en la PBS Odisea de Solomon Northup, y otra como película de cine en 2013, ganadora del Oscar al mejor largometraje.?
